Rice Fields of Guilin

9-14-02

So we started off the day with the standard buffet meal. Then meet our, I could careless about you, guide. We drove for 1 hour until we reached the port for the Lijuang River Cruise. Jimmy basically just left us there and told us we where to meet someone in Yangshuo named Toa Ping. We barely can understand this guy.

The cruise tour started and the views where wonderful. So many poor people working in the rice fields though, pretty sad. Did see wildlife, cormorants, pelicans, water buffalo and some blue and red butterflies. Had lunch around 1200 and then spent the rest of the trip downstairs with Geoff as he was not feeling good.

Tata Ride with Tao Ping

So today we traveled to the Reed flute caves where thousands of Chinese people stayed during the war with Japan for refuge. At one point the Japanese invaded the caves and placed poisonous gas in the caves, killing many of the people.

After this Jimmy dropped us off 6 hours before our plane left. Asian Voyages will be sure to get a complaint from us, in addition, he did not have us fill out an evaluation on him. So Geoff and I played cards, ate a pretty tasteless dinner and waited for the plane. Did you know it takes 35 minutes to complete a game of WAR.

Once off the boat we met Michelle who was to bring us up to the place to meet Toa Ping. Well we looked around in a couple of the stores and they where all the same, nothing unique from store to store. Then Toa Ping showed up and we had no idea what she was saying, I guess that was good because the price to ride in a TaTa (motorcycle with a two seated thing hooked on) went from 200 to 150. So we took a 1.5 hour tour of the back hills of Guilin. Of Course we continued to nod when Toa talked to us as we had no idea what she said most of the time. When we got done we ended up having to take a ride to the outside of town, and then walk down a highway to meet our guide as Jim did not want to pay the toll into the city.

Our guide entertained us on the way back with snoring in the front seat of the car. Did not talk to us basically the whole time until we got to our hotel. So once at the hotel we rested, had dinner and now we are watching China’s Women vs. Brazil. We are looking forward to going to Guilin’s sites tomorrow, granted we are not looking forward to our crappy guide.

The we went to Fubo hill after lunch where General Fubo used his sword to cut a stone and it was where is army settled down. The we went to Elephant Hill which was a rock that looks somewhat like an elephant. After this we went to the Guilin Cable Cars, where we think Jimmy cheated us by telling us the ride would cost 120 yuan per person. Well we don’t think he ever bought a ticket and don’t think that was the price, granted it was worth the ride. Went to the top of a hill that overlooked Guilin.
